Our expert take on Saatva Solaire mattress

Unlike beds that receive the bulk of support from innersprings or dense memory foam, the Saatva Solaire has air chambers that inflate and deflate. The Solaire offers 50 firmness settings, allowing people to find their ideal balance of pressure relief and support. The Solaire is also built with other high-end materials to provide more pressure point The parts of the sleeper’s body that are in direct contact with the mattress, such as the backside, shoulder, hips, and ribcage relief and support. The top layer is a thick Euro pillow top A style of pillow top that provides an added layer of plush—the extra layer of padding is stitched beneath the mattress cover, so it’s flush with the edges of the mattress without adding extra height with firmer support in the center, similar to the Saatva Classic mattress. The pillow top has a quilted cover made from breathable organic cotton. The first comfort layer is made from Talalay latex A natural rubber material that offers breathability and temperature regulation , which we found offers great responsiveness How much surface bounce a mattress has and how it responds to pressure or the sleeper’s movements, making it easier to move around and change sleeping positions and ease of movement. The other layer is memory foam infused with cooling gel to draw away body heat and contour a sleeper’s curves.

The mattress comes with a corded remote with up and down arrow buttons to raise and lower the pressure of the air chambers and its overall firmness. When you find your ideal firmness setting, press the memory button for five seconds to keep the mattress at your preferred level.

Our testers also went through each firmness level to determine the setting most comfortable for different sleepers. As the numbers increase, the air chambers inflate, making the mattress firmer. Our testers rated setting 20 a 5.5 out of 10 and setting 40 a 6.5 out of 10 for firmness. At its highest setting, our testers rated the mattress a seven out of 10, giving this mattress a firmness range of medium-soft to firm.

Our testers gave the Saatva Solaire an overall score of 4.6 out of five for pressure relief, saying it provided a cushiony feel. When they lay down on a pressure map A mat with sensors that detects pressure buildup when someone lies across it , it revealed no signs of pressure buildup around the hips and shoulders while on their side, and our testers felt well-supported with good contouring while on their back. We scored it a 4.5 out of five for support because it kept our spine aligned and lower back supported.

We think most sleepers will find their ideal score between 20–40, with each setting offering different balances of plushness and firmness. But stomach sleepers will likely benefit the most from a firmness level above 40, so they get the support to keep their hips lifted and spine neutral. Although we think this mattress is too soft for higher-weight (more than 250 pounds) stomach sleepers.

We chose the Saatva Solaire as one of the best mattresses for couples because sizes queen and larger offer independent control for each side of the bed, allowing couples to customize their side of the bed to their preference. This mattress also had minimal motion transfer The amount of movement felt on one side of the mattress when a bed partner moves on the other side of the bed from one side of the bed to another, with our testers scoring it 4.5 out of five for motion isolation.

We also like that the Solaire is available in split king and split California king and is compatible with an adjustable base for more tailored comfort.

While our testers scored the Saatva Solaire poorly for bounce, they still found the material responsive enough that they could move around easily. Our testers also said it has strong edge support, giving it a 4.5 out of 5. They didn’t feel a dip in support when they lay near the edge and noted that higher firmness levels provided greater support. This is ideal for adults who need a strong edge to help them get in and out of bed.

Our team also thinks the Solaire is one of the best mattresses for hip pain. Adults with hip pain may want to select a firmness level lower than 35 to ensure they receive enough sinkage to prevent pressure buildup in painful areas.

From our tester

“As I got to the lower firmness levels, I experienced a lot of comfortable sinkage laying on my back and side. One thing this mattress excels at is contouring, but I never felt stuck inside the plush pillow top.”

Bottom line

The Saatva Solaire is a luxury mattress for sleepers who want customized comfort. Using a remote control, you can inflate or deflate the mattress to your preference.

Couples of different body types or sleep positions tend to have different firmness needs, and not all mattresses can offer a compromise. But you can customize each side’s firmness level to each person’s preference when you get the Saatva Solaire in sizes queen or larger. Plus, the bed’s pillow top and memory foam layer absorb motion, making it less likely you’ll feel your partner’s movements at night.

This mattress may not appeal to shoppers on a budget, but the Saatva brand often offers discounts, which can significantly lower the price. If you buy the Solaire and find it’s not a good fit, you can return it within 365 days of purchase for a full refund minus a $99 return fee.

Frequently asked questions

All sizes of the Saatva Solaire are 13 inches thick. The mattress consists of a 3-inch Euro pillow top, a 1-inch layer of latex foam, a 2-inch layer of gel-infused memory foam, moisture barriers, and air chambers surrounded by a reinforced edge.

The Saatva Solaire is one of our Review Team’s top mattress picks for couples. Couples with different firmness preferences can each control their side to adjust the dual air chambers with more or less air. When shopping for mattresses, couples should look for options that isolate movement from one side to the other and offer good support around the edge. Our testers felt little movement when one person changed positions from the opposite side of the mattress. They were also impressed with this mattress’s edge support and felt safe when lying close to the edge.

Like most mattresses, the Saatva Solaire should last seven to 10 years. It’s built with a reinforced edge to prevent sagging and moisture barriers to prevent bacteria and mold growth. Every Saatva mattress also has a limited lifetime warranty covering workmanship and material defects as long as it withstands normal use.
