Key Takeaways

Organic mattresses are designed for anyone seeking a healthier lifestyle, but they are particularly beneficial for anyone with allergies or chemical sensitivities or who prioritizes eco-friendly and sustainable living practices. Organic mattresses are made from natural, non-toxic materials such as organic latex, wool, and cotton. They avoid harmful chemicals and synthetic materials often found in even the best mattresses on the market.

As we explore the six best organic mattresses of 2024, we focus on providing our readers with options that fit their individual preferences and needs and align with a healthier, more conscious approach to living.

Best organic mattress in 2024

Naturally Derived Fabrics

Organic mattresses often use naturally derived fibers for the base of their fabric components. These include natural fibers like cotton, wool, cashmere, and hemp, but some synthetic fibers, including Tencel and bamboo, are derived from natural polymers.

Low VOC

Called off-gassing, new mattresses commonly put off a strong smell when they are first unpackaged in the home. VOCs, or volatile organic compounds, present in the mattress vaporize at room temperature, but organic mattresses may have low VOC ratings.

Latex Foam

Foam and hybrid mattresses most commonly use memory foam, which is made from polyurethane. If natural and organic materials are important to you, look for brands using latex as a foam alternative.

Prioritizes Comfort and Quality

Just because a mattress claims to be environmentally friendly and to contain all-natural materials, it may not always be true. When you’re looking for an organic mattress, you want one with high standards for quality and comfort while providing you with the all-natural materials and eco-friendly practices you seek.

Our top pick

Our expert take on the Birch Natural mattress

The Birch Natural mattress emerges as an exceptional hybrid organic option, combining the resilience of springs with the comfort of natural latex. It’s especially noteworthy for its commitment to eco-friendly materials, including organic cotton and wool, which support sustainable practices and cater to the health-conscious consumer.

We were impressed with the edge support of the Birch Natural mattress, which earned our highest score.

The mattress boasts a medium-firm firmness level (6.5 out of 10), ideal for a broad range of sleep preferences. It has perfect (5 out of 5) scores in edge support and bounce. Strong edge support enhances the usable sleep surface and provides a stable sitting edge. The high responsiveness and bounce make it ideal for older adults and combination sleepers, helping with easy movement and position changes.

A high bounce usually translates into less motion isolation, so couples might experience disturbances from each other’s movements. It also scored a 3 out of 5 for cooling, so some sleepers may find it doesn’t offer enough temperature regulation, especially in warmer climates or for those prone to overheating. The mattress lacks handles and is relatively heavy, making it challenging to adjust or rotate. For those worried about setup, white glove delivery is available at an additional charge.

“I liked that everything is conforming to me, but I still feel more on top of the mattress. I am not sinking as much as on [other mattresses] for sure, since it’s not a super plus, quilted top layer.”

Our expert take on the WinkBeds EcoCloud Hybrid mattress

Organic mattresses can often be on the firmer side, but the EcoCloud mattress is the softest mattress in our review, scoring 5.5 out of 10. Its thoughtful design includes a 12.5-inch profile with a soft, quilted cover made from 100% organic cotton and sustainable New Zealand wool, ensuring sleepers stay cool, dry, and comfortable throughout the night.

The WinkBed EcoCloud Hybrid scored well on our edge support tests, earning a 4.5 out of 5.

The key to the EcoCloud’s design is its 4 inches of premium Talalay latex, strategically textured and zoned for enhanced support and comfort. This type of latex, praised for its breathability and hypoallergenic properties, offers tailored support for the lower back and hips while providing a softer cushion for the shoulders and legs. The design supports optimal sleep posture and eases pressure points, promising a reduction in morning aches and pains.

The mattress’s core is a five-zoned, individually wrapped innerspring system made from recycled steel that provides targeted support and durability. Its “Extra-Edge” system is designed to support sleepers at the bed’s edges without the worry of sagging.

Our tester noted that whether lying on their back, side, or stomach, the mattress delivers a “good versatile feel,” with specialized zones that cater to different body parts, ensuring comfort and alignment. It scored a 5 out of 5 for overall support and bounce and 4 out of 5 for edge support and temperature control. Its lowest score was for motion isolation (3.5/5), but that is a decent amount of isolation for most couples to feel comfortable sleeping on a mattress together without too much disturbance.

This mattress earned a 4.5 out of 5 “functional support” score, our Review Team’s way to evaluate the mattress’s appeal and performance for older adults, which takes into consideration its weighted scores for firmness (30%), overall support (30%), edge support (30%), and bounce (10%). This is a good to excellent functional support score, meaning this mattress will assist with mobility and be less likely to cause falls, a major concern for older adults, considering over one in four older adults fall each year.

It’s not the cheapest, but it is made of biodegradable materials (not that I’ll be throwing it out any time soon).” – Kevin O., verified buyer on 08/03/2023

Our expert take on the Awara Natural Hybrid mattress

Price was the most important factor in our Reviews Team poll of 600 mattress shoppers. The majority of respondents had a budget of $500–$1000. With discounts and promotions, this is one of the few organic mattresses that fits that budget.

You might expect an affordably priced mattress to skimp on things like the trial period and warranty, but the Awara Natural Hybrid offers the longest for both in this review. Its design comprises three layers: steel coils, Dunlop latex, and an organic cotton and wool cover.

The Awara Natural Hybrid mattress is a firm (7.5 out of 10) and supportive option for sleepers, particularly those who prefer sleeping on their back. This level of firmness may apply too much pressure on the hips and shoulders for side sleepers though, especially those of light or average weight.

The mattress shines in its edge support, rated a perfect 5 out 5, which is excellent for those who appreciate stability across the entire surface of the mattress and the extra support for getting in and out of bed. Bounce is another area where the Awara excels, with a 5 out of 5 rating. This level of responsiveness is beneficial for combination sleepers who change positions throughout the night and appreciate ease of movement.

In terms of cooling, the Awara scores a 4 out of 5, indicating its ability to maintain a cool sleep environment throughout the night. This is due to the breathable nature of its organic cotton and wool cover and the natural temperature regulation properties of Dunlop latex.

Like many hybrid mattresses, it scores lower in motion isolation (3 out of 5). This could be a potential drawback for couples or those who share the bed with pets. The high bounce and responsiveness could lead to disturbances from one sleeper’s movements affecting the other.

The functional score for the Awara Natural Hybrid is high, at 4.7 out of 5, making this a great option for budget-conscious older adults. Our tester said, “The combination of strong edge support and ease of movement makes this a great mattress for older adults. The springy Dunlap latex layer makes this better than a memory foam type hybrid for mobility and ease of movement.”

Our expert take on the Nolah Natural mattress

Our Reviews Team survey found that the majority of people are side sleepers (48.5%), compared to 20.5% combination sleepers, 17.3% back sleepers, and 13.7% stomach sleepers. The Nolah Natural mattress stands out for several reasons. First are its perfect scores (5 out of 5) for pressure relief and bounce. The Talalay latex comfort layer offers better pressure relief than synthetic or Dunlop latex, cushioning joints and easing tension around pain points—crucial for side sleepers who often deal with pressure on their hips and shoulders. This mattress is also supportive and responsive due to an 8-inch support coil system that provides structured support at three targeted zones to keep the spine aligned. This layer complements the responsiveness of the latex layers above, offering a balance that’s hard to find in other mattresses.

Sleepers who tend to overheat will likely find relief in the Nolah Natural’s cooling properties. Hole-punched Talalay latex foam and individually wrapped coils allow maximum airflow, while the breathable organic cotton cover and wool layers wick away moisture.

The materials are not only eco-friendly but hypoallergenic, making this mattress an ideal choice for environmentally conscious sleepers with allergies or sensitivities. The Nolah Natural promises durability with its high-quality materials and construction and offers a lifetime warranty.

The Nolah Natural mattress scored 4 out of 5 in our edge support testing.

While the Nolah Natural presents many benefits, there are a few considerations for potential buyers: Due to its bouncy nature, the mattress may not isolate motion as well as all-foam designs, potentially disturbing light sleepers with restless partners. It received a 2 out of 5 score for motion isolation. It may be too soft for higher-weight sleepers or those who prefer a firmer surface, but it did receive fairly high support ratings: 4.5 out of 5 for overall support, and 4 out of 5 edge support.

Customer reviews

The Nolah Natural has a 4.8-star rating out of 5 with 135 reviews on its website. Multiple reviewers mentioned that they are side-sleepers or combination sleepers and have found they sleep very soundly on this mattress.

“I can fall into a deep sleep and wake up in the same position I fell asleep in. Some days it can be on my side and others can be on my back or stomach. I can’t tell you if it is Firm, Medium, or Soft, but whatever you want to call it, whatever it is, it is the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in.” – Louis B., verified buyer on 9/20/2023

On Google, the Nolah Natural has a 4.8-star rating with 113 reviews. More than one side sleeper mentioned that the softness of this bed was very comfortable for them, but some buyers did mention they found it softer than the medium firmness rating.

Our expert take on the Saatva Latex Hybrid mattress

Research suggests that firm mattresses can help support and keep the spine aligned while sleeping. The Saatva Latex Hybrid’s firm (7 out of 10) makes it one of the best mattresses for back trouble. Our tester found that “even with a pillow top and a thick 3-inch latex layer, this is definitely not a soft mattress.”

Despite its firmness, our tester found that the mattress molds to the body’s contours, courtesy of the thick latex layer atop a sophisticated pocket coil system. Each coil is designed to compress individually based on the direct weight above it, ensuring personalized support across various body parts, from the hips to the head. It received a 4 out of 5 for overall support.

This mattress excels in edge support, where it received a 5 out of 5 score, ensuring stability whether you’re merely sitting on the edge or lying close to it. The Talalay latex, known for its slight softness and immediate bounce-back qualities, enhances the bed’s comfort. It received a 4 out of 5 for bounce. Its aerated design facilitates effective heat dissipation and received a 4 out of 5 score for cooling.

It boasts a hand-tufted cushioned Euro top A style of pillow top that provides an added layer of plush. The extra layer of padding is stitched beneath the mattress cover, so it’s flush with the edges of the mattress without adding extra height. for additional comfort, covered in naturally breathable and hypoallergenic organic cotton. Beneath this layer lies GOTS-certified The leading textile processing standard for organic fibers worldwide. This means it has been ethically sourced and monitored during the production process. organic New Zealand wool, which wicks away moisture and serves as a natural flame barrier. The centerpiece, a 3-inch layer of natural latex, offers tailored support in the lumbar region, enhancing the mattress’s ability to alleviate back discomfort. The pocketed coil unit beneath further adapts to body movements, while an organic pad ensures the mattress’s durability and longevity.

Person sitting on the side of a mattress to test edge support
Our tester rated the edge support for the Saatva Latex Hybrid as a 5 out of 5.

Despite its many strengths, the Saatva Latex Hybrid may present challenges for certain sleepers. Lightweight individuals or those preferring a plush mattress might find its firmness less accommodating, potentially complicating comfort for those with specific conditions requiring extra pressure relief. Additionally, while the mattress excels in support and cooling, its significant bounce could disrupt sleep for couples sensitive to motion transfer. The high-quality materials and construction result in a higher price tag, which may not fit all budgets.

Our expert take on the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss mattress

The Botanical Bliss comes in three firmness options: medium, medium-firm, or flippable dual firmness with medium on one side and medium-firm on the other. We tested the medium-firm model and ranked it a 7.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. Side sleepers will generally prefer the medium option, while back and stomach sleepers should opt for the medium-firm model

This mattress also comes in three height options. The 9-inch model is recommended for those under 200 pounds and consists of three layers: 1-inch organic cotton cover, 2-inch organic latex layer, and 6-inch Dunlop latex core. The 10-inch model is recommended for those weighing 200–250 pounds and features three layers: 1-inch organic cotton cover, 3-inch organic latex layer, and 6-inch Dunlop latex core. The 12-inch model is recommended for those over 250 pounds and has four layers: 1-inch organic cotton cover, 2-inch organic latex layer, 3-inch Dunlop latex layer, and 6-inch Dunlop latex core.

Like other mattresses in this review, the Botanical Bliss is eco-friendly and made with all-natural materials, offering a sleep environment free from toxic chemicals and pesticides. As an added bonus, PlushBeds mattresses are handmade in California, supporting local manufacturing.

The Botanical Bliss boasts an organic cotton cover that’s not only soft and breathable but also GOTS-certified, meaning it meets rigorous organic, eco-friendly, and ethical standards. The inclusion of GOTS-certified organic wool as an additional layer enhances padding and capitalizes on the wool’s natural breathability, which is boosted by an organic cotton panel beneath it to maintain uniformity.

Its latex layers are central to the mattress’s design; the topmost Talalay latex layer is specifically engineered for pressure relief, maintaining a buoyant feel that distinguishes it from conventional mattresses. It received a 3 out of 5 score for pressure relief. Talalay latex is more firm and springy and not as pressure-relieving as memory foam. As would be expected with springy materials, the motion transfer rating is average at 3 out of 5. This mattress features a firm 6-inch Dunlop latex support core, offering robust support that’s rare to find in an all-foam mattress. It received a perfect 5 out of 5 score for overall support. It also got a perfect 5 out of 5 for edge support, meaning it is easy to get in and out of bed.

Organic mattresses tend to be costly, and this all-foam model is no exception. However, the price reflects the high-quality nature of the materials. The Botanical Bliss is the only mattress in this review to get a perfect 5 out of 5 functional support score. This makes the mattress an ideal choice for older adults seeking an all-foam, eco- and health-conscious mattress.

Customer reviews

The PlushBed Botanical Bliss has a 4.9-star rating out of 5, with over 4,440 reviews on its website. Many reviewers mention how cool the mattress feels, which can be attributed to the breathability of the latex layers.

“Since I first bought a latex bed from Plushbeds, I have slept better and wake up better refreshed and without strange back pains. Just got a Cal King and I really like the extra length while it is still plenty wide for two!” – Brian C., verified buyer on 04/24/2024

“Absolutely love this bed. Most comfortable bed I’ve ever owned. My husband and I couldn’t be happier. Definitely get this. You won’t be sorry.” – Dianne T., verified buyer on 02/23/2024

On Google, the PlushBed Botanical Bliss has a 4.9-star rating out of 5 with over 4,170 reviews.  While most of the reviewers had positive things to say about this mattress, some did have negative things to say about the durability, commenting that they had to make warranty claims after owning the mattress for one, two, or three years.

How we test organic mattresses

Because we know that the right mattress promotes good sleep and getting adequate sleep is important to our overall well-being, we have dedicated extensive time and effort to research and test mattresses to find the best organic mattresses on the market. Our Reviews Team has dedicated more than 1,000 hours to researching the mattress industry, consulting at least 10 health care professionals, and testing roughly 40 brands and 130 unique mattress models for quality and comfort. We’ve also interviewed 16 older adults who recently purchased a mattress and surveyed more than 3,200 recent mattress customers to understand their experiences shopping for a new bed.

Each mattress undergoes a rigorous 36-page testing procedure to score its different characteristics, including firmness, support, and other aspects most shoppers consider. We choose the best organic mattresses based on the scores of the relevant criteria. See how we tested the most important considerations for this review below.

Based on information gathered from research, testing, surveys, and interviews, we compile ratings of our mattress scorecard, weighing individual scores to create one overall rating of each mattress. All of the mattresses on this roundup have a minimum overall rating of 8/10.

Firmness

Mattresses are scored on a 1 to 10 scale, with 1 representing an extra soft mattress and 10 an extra firm mattress. If a mattress scores between 4 and 7, it is considered a medium firm mattress.

We understand that each person has their own firmness needs, and firmness is generally a subjective experience. We had our testers compare their experience with each mattress with the brand’s firmness rating to see if the two matched up.

Cooling

Natural materials are often more breathable than synthetic materials, but that doesn’t guarantee organic mattresses will always have good cooling capabilities. During testing, we used a thermal gun to measure the temperature of each model before and after a tester spent five minutes on the bed. Anything less than a 7.2 temperature increase is considered excellent temperature regulation.

Pressure relief

We know that finding a mattress made from all-natural, organic materials doesn’t mean much if it isn’t comfortable or triggers chronic pain. During testing, we used a pressure mat to measure pressure relief, which is an important indicator of comfort for sleepers. We rated each mattress based on even weight distribution, which prevents pressure build-up at the hips, lower back, and shoulders.

Off-gassing

When we open and inspect all mattresses, we assess any off-gassing smells, noting which models release strong odors and which do not. Organic mattresses generally produce less off-gassing due to the absence of synthetic foams and chemicals, but we carefully document any exceptions.

To learn more about our testing, review our sleep methodology.

We continuously test new mattresses each month and make sure we give you the most up-to-date information possible. Each mattress is evaluated independently, using a standardized 42-question testing form focused on things like pressure relief, responsiveness, and affordability.

How to choose an organic mattress

While our testing determined that the WinkBed EcoCloud Hybrid was the best organic mattress overall, we also understand how much personal preference goes into finding the right mattress. So while we can offer recommendations, only you can determine the best mattress to meet your needs.. As you’re looking to buy a new organic mattress, we suggest you keep these considerations in mind.

Certifications

Organic certifications for mattresses are given by third-party organizations with an intimate understanding of each step of the manufacturing process. Looking for these certifications can help you avoid falling victim to greenwashing. Greenwashing describes the habit of marketing items as eco-friendly using buzzwords that don’t deliver much, and it is an unfortunate byproduct of the organic mattress industry.

While organic mattresses do not have a specific certification, there are three certifications relevant to the materials used.

Materials

In organic mattresses, naturally derived materials are used in place of conventional, man-made materials. These materials include naturally-derived fibers, such as cotton, wool, cashmere, and hemp. Bamboo, Tencel, and other synthetic fibers are sometimes used because they are derived from natural polymers. We specifically like natural fibers in mattresses because they tend to be more breathable than synthetics, working well for sleepers who run hot.

In organic mattresses, latex is a common alternative to memory foam. Latex is from rubber trees and has similar characteristics to foam, with a few important differences. Latex is naturally more breathable than memory foam, so mattresses using latex are typically cooler. Latex is also less dense, which gives it better bounce and responsiveness than traditional memory foam.

Quality and Durability

Because an organic mattress needs to do more than meet a set of certifications, we encourage organic mattress shoppers to take a close look at third-party testing and reviews to get a full picture of the quality and durability of their chosen mattress. Some things to look for include reports of early mattress breakdown, multiple reports of warranty claims and manufacturing defects, and complaints of poor customer service response. While it is typical to see a small number of complaints online about even the best products, a pattern of complaints about the same issues can indicate that the mattress brand is not prioritizing the quality and durability of its products but using greenwashing in the marketing to justify a higher price point.

Firmness

It is important to find a mattress that not only meets your personal standards for organic and natural materials but also meets your specific comfort needs so you can get quality sleep each night. One thing to keep in mind is the firmness of the mattress, which is rated on a 1 to 10 scale, with 1 representing extra soft, 4 to 7 representing medium firmness, and 10 representing extra firm.

The firmness level you find most comfortable is the best one for you. In general, the goal is to find a firmness level that is supportive enough to maintain spine neutrality in your preferred sleep position. Side sleepers often find mattresses with a medium firmness level are soft enough to contour to their curves while preventing pressure build-up at the shoulders and hips. The best mattress for back sleepers is a medium-firm model, which will support your hips while also cradling your lower back. Most stomach sleepers will be most comfortable with a medium-firm to firm mattress because stomach sleepers require a little extra support to avoid their hips sinking uncomfortably in the mattress.

But mattress firmness is subjective, meaning different people interpret firmness differently. This is particularly true of different body types, with a lighter person (weighing less than 130 points) perceiving a mattress to be firmer than an average weight person. A heavy person (weighing more than 250 pounds) will compress the surface of a mattress more, experiencing a mattress as less firm.

What is an organic mattress?

An organic mattress is one using natural materials and undergoes rigorous testing to ensure it has a lower impact on the environment and is harmless to human health. The materials used in an organic mattress are typically natural fibers or naturally derived synthetic fibers. Mattresses containing foam will use latex foam from organically grown rubber trees instead of memory foam.

The materials used in organic mattresses will usually be tested for chemicals using OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 testing, which tests materials used in mattresses for over 1,000 harmful chemicals.

Are organic mattresses worth the cost?

The cost of an organic mattress is between $1,299 and $3,548. Organic materials tend to be more expensive, with the additional sourcing and manufacturing standards, along with the cost of testing and certification, contributing to the increased costs. If you want to purchase an organic mattress due to allergies, sensitivity to certain chemicals, or to support eco-friendly production practices, you will likely find organic mattresses to be worth the cost.

It is also true that greenwashing, or marketing an item as eco-friendly, green, or natural without actually complying with organic standards, is a marketing strategy used by many companies. The practice manipulates buyers by using misleading buzzwords to convince them a low-quality product is worth the premium price tag. If buying organic is a personal value you hold, it is important to do due diligence by researching the items to ensure they really meet your standards.

How to save money on an organic mattress

During our testing and research, we found that the best affordable organic mattress was the Awara Natural Hybrid, which costs $1,699 for a queen-size mattress and is often marked down by 40%. While it is certainly true that you can expect to spend more on an organic mattress when compared to conventional options, there are also ways to save money. Some strategies for saving on an organic mattress include:

How to find organic bedding

Fortunately, if you are shopping for organic bedding to go with your new mattress, you will find that much of the information about certification and natural materials we’ve provided about mattresses is true about organic bedding as well. Organic bedding is typically made from natural materials, and the best sheets are soft, affordable, and durable.

When shopping for pillows, it is important to keep in mind the best pillows aren’t just organic. They should also be suited to your preferred sleeping position. Side sleepers, for example, will find high loft pillows most comfortable, while back sleepers often prefer medium loft, and stomach sleepers have low loft.

Bottom line

Birch Natural is the best organic mattress overall because of the use of natural materials, including the breathable cotton cover, and hygroscopic organic wool, and natural latex. We also found this mattress to provide excellent pressure relief along with zone support best suited to side and back sleepers. The WinkBed EcoCloud Hybrid is a hypoallergenic mattress, like many organic mattresses. We feel it would be great for someone who has allergies or is looking to avoid harmful chemicals. If you value eco-friendly materials, any of the mattresses on this list are great choices, as they prioritize natural materials and manufacturing practices.

Those seeking an organic mattress have plenty of options, but be aware that many natural mattresses cost more than traditional ones. Look for sales and discounts to avoid paying full price.

Frequently asked questions

Organic mattresses are worth considering if you prioritize environmental sustainability, health, and long-term durability in your purchasing decisions. They are made from natural materials like organic cotton, wool, and latex, which are cultivated and processed without harmful chemicals. This approach supports sustainable farming practices and reduces exposure to potentially toxic substances found in conventional mattresses.

Yes, organic mattresses can be better for your health for multiple reasons. They are crafted from natural materials less likely to contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can off-gas and contribute to indoor air pollution. Organic materials like wool also have natural moisture-wicking and temperature-regulating properties, often providing a cooler sleep environment. Furthermore, organic mattresses are often hypoallergenic, making them a good choice for individuals with allergies or sensitivities to synthetic materials and chemicals.

The healthiest mattress to buy is one that aligns with your specific health needs, preferences, and values. Generally, mattresses made from organic and natural materials are considered healthier options due to their lower chemical content and potential for improved sleep quality. Look for certifications such as GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) for organic fibers, GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) for organic latex, and certifications indicating low VOC emissions, such as Greenguard Gold or CertiPUR-US (for polyurethane foams).

The type of organic mattress you purchase will determine what materials are used. In general, you can expect natural materials, including fabrics made from natural fibers, like cotton, wool, and hemp, as well as naturally-derived, man made fabrics like tencel and bamboo. If the mattress you purchase contains foam, it will be latex because it is naturally sourced from rubber trees.
