Key Takeaways

Buying a mattress is a considerable investment, and most people want to ensure it’ll last a long time. But over time, a mattress may sag, which happens when it “dips” in the middle due to pressure from body weight. Uneven weight distribution can lead to poor spinal alignment, increased stress on pressure points, muscle strain, and aggravation of pre-existing conditions, like arthritis and sciatica.

While sagging is inevitable in the lifespan of any mattress, some of the best mattresses are more durable than others and are designed to go longer without sagging. To help you make the most informed purchase, our team of researchers evaluated mattresses and came up with eight choices we think are the best that won’t sag. Keep reading to see our top picks.

Best mattress that won’t sag in 2024

What we look for in a mattress that won’t sag

Several factors should be taken into consideration when looking for a mattress that won’t sag:

Materials

Look for a mattress made with high-quality, durable materials that will resist sagging. In most cases, hybrid mattresses made with a combination of latex or memory foam and springs tend to last longer than springs or foam alone.

A long trial period

A trial period of 100 nights or more gives you three months to test your mattress and return it if it begins to dip or sag.

Firmness

Firmer mattresses that provide a high level of support are likely to be more durable and maintain their form longer.

Edge support

Good edge support can help resist sagging by enhancing durability and contributing to a solid sleep surface.

Our Top Pick

Our expert take on the Saatva Classic mattress

The Saatva Classic is a luxury hybrid mattress made with high-density foam and innerspring coils that have been tempered (which makes them tougher) three times for increased durability. Although we tested the luxury firmness level of this model, the mattress also comes in two other firmness levels: plush and firm.

The mattress is topped with a 3-inch Euro-top A style of pillow top that provides an added layer of plush. The extra layer of padding is stitched beneath the mattress cover, so it’s flush with the edges of the mattress without adding extra height. that adds comfort and contouring for sleepers who want to feel more “in” their mattress instead of on it. The mattress features a layer of high-density memory foam that’s Certi-PUR US This is a certification given to foam bedding materials that have been tested and confirmed to be environmentally friendly. certified and provides great pressure relief in the lower back area.

The mattress also earned high scores in cooling due to its breathable, organic cotton cover and hybrid design, which promotes breathability through the coils.

Our testers felt the mattress did a great job relieving pressure and offered a high level of support for a variety of sleepers. Combination sleepers should also feel comfortable on the Saatva Classic due to its high responsiveness, making it easy to move around on. Because it’s bouncy, couples who co-sleep and are easily disturbed may want to explore other options that isolate motion better.

“I bought the queen luxury firm mattress and have been sleeping on it for about two weeks. I have spinal lumbar stenosis, which can be quite painful, and the support given from the middle portion of the mattress has really made my pain level decrease dramatically. The luxury firm is soft yet firm. I’m sleeping better and feeling better. Thank you, Saatva.”

 – Becky P., verified reviewer on 8/1/2023

“I injured my shoulder last year. That, and my rheumatoid arthritis, make it very difficult to choose a right mattress. After researching,I decided on Saatva Classic. Combined with correct height pillows, this mattress’s plushness is just right. It does not press my shoulders hard like firm mattress. I can sleep better with it. The delivery process was perfect and removal of old one was so helpful.”

 – Toots, verified reviewer on 4/20/2023

On Google, the Saatva Classic mattress has a 4.4 star rating with 4,328 reviews. While most users gave the mattress a positive rating, some reviewers said the mattress felt firmer than advertised, while others felt delivery was slow.

Our expert take on the Helix Dusk Luxe mattress

The Helix Dusk Luxe is a hybrid mattress with a firm feel made with layers of responsive and contouring foam on top of a layer of steel coils zoned for additional lower back support. It comes with a plush pillow top for added comfort, providing additional contouring for sleepers who want pressure relief. Sleepers can choose between the standard Tencel A brand of lyocell fiber made from wood pulp that’s known for being soft, breathable, and absorbent. cover or upgrade to the GlacioTex Cooling cover, designed to feel cool to the touch.

While the first layers of the mattress provide cradling, our testers still felt it was firm, making it a good option for higher-weight sleepers who need additional support. Based on our testing, we feel the Helix Dusk Luxe would be an ideal pick for higher-weight back and side sleepers and would also work well for higher-weight stomach and combination sleepers. Lighter-weight side sleepers may feel it’s too firm but should feel supported in back and stomach sleeping positions.

Sleepers can also upgrade their mattress to include the ErgoAlign Layer, which includes a zoned layer of high-density contouring to provide additional support and pressure relief.

Customer reviews

The Helix Dusk Luxe has 4.5 out of five stars and more than 1,265 reviews on the brand’s website. Many reviewers mention how much relief it offers for back pain and general aches.

Great mattress. Offers just the right amount of firmness and comfort at the same time. Helix customer support is phenomenal. We started with the Midnight and it was too soft for our preference. Customer service made it super easy to get the Dusk and have the Midnight mattress picked up. I highly recommend Helix and the Dusk mattress.

– Matt D., verified buyer on 3/17/2024

“Prior to sleeping on the Helix Dusk Deluxe I was experiencing back stiffness every morning. Since I have been sleeping on it for a few months, that stiffness has gone away and I wake up more refreshed. I added the cool topper to the mattress, which keeps the bed cool and makes for more comfortable sleeping.”

 – Carolyn P., verified buyer on 5/13/2024

“Not for me, but I can definitely see how someone can love this mattress. I just have specific spine issues that didn’t fit right with this mattress. Their customer service was amazing for returns. I couldn’t get use to the memory foam and the type of firmness that it provided. I am not a combination sleeper but a stomach sleeper.”

WinkBeds currently offers a $50 discount for current and former U.S. military, their families, and first responders, including law enforcement, fire, and health care workers.

Our expert take on The WinkBed mattress

The WinkBed mattress is a hybrid luxury mattress with cooling gel-infused memory foam and individually wrapped coils. It’s made from eco-friendly materials, including a Tencel cover made with sustainably sourced eucalyptus and recycled steel coils.

The WinkBed comes in four firmness levels: softer, luxury firm, firmer, and plus (designed for higher-weight sleepers). We reviewed the luxury firm model, the brand’s medium-firm mattress model.

The top gel foam layers provide contouring, making it one of the best mattresses for side sleepers looking for pressure relief in the shoulder and hip area. This layer of memory foam also helps reduce motion transfer, meaning it should be a good choice for couples.

While the mattress provides a good level of contouring, the layer of coils provides zoned support for people who need additional lower back support.

– Marvin H., verified buyer on 6/2/2024

“I love this bed! It is just the right balance of firmness and soft comfort. The company has been fantastic about communicating and offering support. Can’t recommend highly enough.”

– Sarah S., verified buyer on 2/14/2024

“My husband has chronic back pain after four surgeries. Has not slept through the night for years. He thought this might be the solution. He likes the mattress but still doesn’t sleep through the night. I don’t feel any difference on it and any other mattress. He likes it though, so I guess it’s a keeper. I am disappointed, but sometimes there is no solution for chronic pain.”

Our expert take on the Nolah Evolution mattress

The Nolah Evolution is a luxury hybrid mattress made with the brand’s AirFoam (designed with targeted support and additional pressure-relieving qualities) and individually wrapped innerspring coils. The mattress has a Euro-pillow topper wrapped in organic cotton, designed to be breathable with a soft, luxurious feel.

Our testers loved the Nolah Evolution for its balance of high-quality, plush-feeling materials and a solid level of support. We found it suitable for sleepers of all weight categories and sleeping styles, but it provided the best level of support for back sleepers who need lower back support. Both the foam and innerspring layers are zoned to provide targeted support where back sleepers need it most to keep the spine neutral.

Combination sleepers may like the high level of responsiveness, which makes it easy for them to switch positions. People who like a little sinkage in their mattress should also enjoy the plush top, which provides a cushiony, contouring feel.

While the mattress is designed with cooling technology, our testers found it performed only average in this area. People who sleep hot may want to explore other, more cooling options.

Our expert take on the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe mattress

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe is a hybrid mattress made with copper-infused memory foam (CopperFlex), TitanCool foam (an elastic foam designed to contour the body), and pocketed innerspring coils. The copper-infused memory foam layer is naturally antibacterial and cooling and helps promote airflow. The mattress also has a layer of gel memory foam, which sleeps cooler than other types of memory foam. The layer of coils supporting the previous foam layers also helps to promote airflow, adding to the overall breathability of the mattress.

We also like the Aurora Luxe because it offers good support for back and side sleepers, maintaining our testers’ spines in a neutral position. Since the mattress is firmer, people who enjoy sinking into their mattress may want to explore some softer or more contouring options.

Our testers also noticed a significant amount of motion transfer, meaning it may not be the best choice for couples or people who co-sleep. Still, the mattress scored a 4.5 out of five for edge support, making it a good option for people who spread out on the bed or need to use the edge for mobility.

Person sitting on the edge of the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe to demonstrate edge firmness
Testers noticed how the cover of the mattress is slick, which causes the sheet, and the person on it, to slide around a bit. A bed sheet with more friction may help, but the mattress height is generally assistive thanks to its tall, 13-inch profile.

Customer reviews

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe has 4.7 stars out of five on its website and more than 3,358 reviews. Many reviewers mention the excellent support it offers and how cool it sleeps.

“I’m only three weeks in on my new Aurora Luxe, and although it hasn’t taken all of my aches and pains away, I do sleep much more sound and wake up more rested. I also sleep cool and comfortable. No more waking up in the middle of the night sweating. I have mobility issues due to arthritis in my back and hips, and getting in and out of bed is so much easier for me now. Side support on my mattress is excellent, and the springs give me a little extra boost when I get out of bed! LOL”

 – Marta H., verified buyer on 5/23/2024

“Wow! Bought this to replace the stock mattress in our camper. Opened it up and thought it had reached full size when we left it after a couple of hours. Went back two days later, and it has completely opened and filled the bed space perfectly. The cooling effects of the mattress are great, the support is fantastic, and in some ways (no split in the middle) it’s better than our king size Sleep Number at home. It’s great to know we will sleep as well or better while camping, as we do at home. The support process by this mattress is amazing, and the pillow top provided just the right amount of comfort.”

 – Cindi G., verified buyer on 11/4/2023

“The bed is much more firm than I thought it would be. We have had it for two weeks and are going to sleep on it a little longer before we decide if we will return it.”

The company offers a one-time 30% discount for military members, first responders, students, and teachers.

Our expert take on the Birch Natural mattress

The Birch Natural is a hybrid mattress with a medium feel made with all-natural and organic materials. All of the materials from the mattress are certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard and are GREENGUARD Gold Certified. These certifications mean Birch meets strict requirements on chemical emissions and the use of certain chemicals in the construction of its products. Birch mattresses are also naturally hypoallergenic and antimicrobial due to their all-natural construction.

The first layer of the mattress is made with organic wool, which is naturally flame-retardant and pressure-relieving. While the brand promotes this layer as wicking away moisture and regulating body temperature, our testers found the mattress heated up the longer they rested on it. As a precaution, sleepers who heat up may want to look for a more cooling mattress.

While the mattress is supportive enough for most sleepers, higher-weight people who sleep on their stomach may find it too soft, while lighter-weight people who sleep on their side may find it too firm.

The Birch Natural has 4.6 out of five stars on the brand’s website and more than 4,520 reviews. Many reviewers mentioned the high-quality construction and the ability to get a better night’s sleep on this mattress.

“Really enjoying the Birch mattress. It is very comfortable. I feel floaty. Actually, I rarely think about the bed, I just get a good night’s sleep. My cat also seems content.”

– Kevin O., verified buyer on 5/8/2024

“The discount code provided by the associate online was the primary reason we purchased the mattress. We had done a good deal of research on organic mattresses and narrowed it down to another brand and Birch. The discount code provided by the associate pushed us over the edge. We purchased the adjustable base with the mattress and love it. The mattress is a bit firm (as described on their website) so we added an organic mattress topper to make it a bit softer. We are really enjoying our sleep and breathing easy because there aren’t a bunch of chemical smells emitting from the bed.”

 – Julia B., verified buyer on 4/13/2024

“Love: GOTS & GreenGuard Gold certified.

Dislike: Lots of motion when my wife moves at night (even with a very sturdy base). We can feel the coils. It is very cold (even with flannel sheets and warm house temperature).

We purchased a queen and a king and have the same experience on both.”

Our expert take on the Plank Firm mattress

The Plank Firm by Brooklyn Bedding is a dual-sided, all-foam mattress with two firmness levels: firm and extra firm. Sleepers who appreciate a firm mattress should enjoy the Plank for the consistent support it provides.

The mattress is constructed with three layers of foam with a quilted cover on both sides, which makes it flippable. The extra firm side features 7 inches of ultra-dense foam that responds quickly to pressure. Underneath that is a layer of TitanFlex foam, which is also the top layer of the firm side, providing a bit more give while maintaining a high level of support.

Higher-weight sleepers may enjoy sleeping on the Plank Firm in all positions, while lighter-weight side and back sleepers will likely feel too much pressure buildup to sleep comfortably. In general, people looking for pressure relief or contouring in any capacity may want to explore softer options.

Tip for sleepers who want a firm mattress and pressure relief: “Using supportive pillows can also be beneficial. For back sleepers, using a pillow under the knees can reduce lower back pressure. Side sleepers may benefit from bending both knees and using a thin pillow between them to help reduce hip strain and stop the lower back and pelvis from twisting.

“Finally a mattress that is comfortable and one where my body does not sag into the mattress. I wake up without any backaches.”

– Mary S., verified buyer on 6/17/2024

“This is better than some prior mattresses I’ve had, but still not as firm as I need. I’m still trying to adjust to see if it will ultimately work.”

 – Anne B., verified buyer on 2/22/2024

“We went to many mattress stores to try to find the hardest mattress possible for my wife who has a fused spine. Nothing worked. I read about the Plank Mattress and we gave it a try. It’s perfect. We did not get the Lux version, since that was rated slightly softer. We use the harder side, and my wife wakes up without any pain.”

 – Jason K., verified buyer on 6/15/24

On Google, the Plank Firm mattress has a 4.4 star rating with 547 reviews. Reviewers mention liking the firm, “on top” feel the mattress offers, but some buyers say there is some sinkage and dipping in the hip area.

Our expert take on the Leesa Sapira Chill mattress

The Leesa Sapira Chill is a luxury hybrid mattress with three different firmness levels: plush, medium-firm, and firm (we tested the medium-firm). It’s made with gel-infused memory foam and individually pocketed coils and offers a plush, contouring feel while offering a good amount of support overall.

Even though the mattress offers good bounce, our testers found it also isolated motion well, which is why we think it’s a good mattress for couples. The mattress offers zoned support ideal for the lower back region and solid edge support.

People who sleep hot should know this mattress is designed with cooling technology. It features cooling fibers in the cover, cooling gel memory foam, a layer of airflow foam, and breathable coils. Our testers found that it lived up to the hype and gave it a five out of five for cooling.

We think this mattress is good for back, side, and combination sleepers and lower-weight stomach sleepers. It may be too soft for average-weight and higher-weight stomach sleepers.

“I was very skeptical of ordering a mattress in a box, but I am so happy with the product! We put the mattress in our son’s room on a platform frame. it’s a perfect firmness and feels like it will last for years. I’m planning on ordering another one for our guest bedroom!”

 – Diane, verified buyer on 5/30/2024

“I really wanted to like this mattress. My husband laid down on it, and it felt like I was going to be bounced off of it like a trampoline. We are returning it. It is made nicely, and I’m grateful for the 100-night return policy. If my hubby was smaller, this might have worked, but it is definitely not for us.”

How we test mattresses that won’t sag

Our Reviews Team has dedicated more than 1,000 hours to researching the mattress industry, consulting at least 10 health care professionals, and testing roughly 40 brands and 130 unique mattress models for quality and comfort. We’ve also interviewed 16 older adults who recently purchased a mattress and surveyed more than 2,700 recent mattress customers to understand their experiences shopping for a new bed.

Each mattress undergoes a rigorous 36-page testing procedure to score its different characteristics, including firmness, support, and other aspects most shoppers consider. We choose the best mattresses for mattresses that won’t sag based on the scores of the relevant criteria. See how we tested the most important considerations for this review below.

Firmness

Like most mattress brands in the industry, we use a one-to-10 scoring method when testing firmness, with 6.5 being the true medium firm. Our testers rate this by lying on the surface and comparing the feel to other mattresses we’ve tested. Material density and coil strength influence firmness the most. Mattresses constructed with coils typically offer more firm support and are less likely to sag, which is why the mattresses on this list are hybrid mattresses. We only included one all-foam mattress, but it’s one of the firmer options on the market, providing the support needed to prevent sagging.

Support

We score support on a scale of one to five, with five being the most supportive. Mattresses with strong support contour and push into the curves of your body, particularly the lower back or midsection. Not only do we feel support during testing, but we can also visualize it through pressure map results. Maps with mostly white space at the lower back show how the mattress isn’t making contact with the area, which means the mattress isn’t supportive. Good support is important in the overall structure of a mattress to prevent sagging.

Edge support

We score edge support on a scale of one to five, with five being the strongest. Our team tests this by sitting and lying on the edge to determine how safe it feels and measure how far it sinks. For example, if the edge of a short 11-inch mattress sinks about 2 inches, it may feel weak because it collapses under body weight. While sagging often happens in the middle of the mattress, good edge support indicates the mattress was designed with durability in mind.

Bounce

Our team scores bounce on a scale between one and five, with five being the most bouncy. We test this by dropping a 10-pound weighted ball on the mattress surface, recording how many times it bounces, and analyzing the sound of its landing. The ball will bounce multiple times on bouncier mattresses before cradling into the surface, while others thud onto the material, indicating low bounce. Good bounce typically means the mattress is responsive and will return to its shape after you’ve gotten up from lying down. Mattresses that are more likely to sag may compress more easily.

Functional support

Our team developed this unique score to understand how well a mattress accommodates mobility issues, like difficulty moving around or getting up from the bed. We combined firmness (30%), support (30%), bounce (10%), and edge support (30%) to create a score between one and five, with five being the most helpful for movement in bed. Mattresses less likely to sag will have a higher functional support score since support and firmness were important factors to consider during our selection process.

How to choose a mattress that won’t sag

Durability

A mattress’s durability will determine how long it lasts and whether it dips in some areas or begins to sag. If you’re looking for a durable mattress, you’ll want to consider certain factors, like coil thickness (a thicker coil is likely to last longer), how many layers the mattress has (this can help prevent compression over time), and the brand reputation (be sure to read customer and professional reviews).

While it’s important to evaluate these factors, there are also things you can do at home to ensure the longevity of your mattress. To prevent sagging over time, try using a mattress protector, rotating your mattress, and choosing a mattress that’s appropriate for your body type. For example, if you’re a higher-weight sleeper, you’ll want to ensure your mattress provides the right level of support so the additional pressure doesn’t lead to sagging.

Materials

Certain materials used in mattresses tend to compress more quickly than others, leading to sagging over time. For example, memory foam is designed to contour to the body’s curves, which is great for pressure relief but can eventually lead to indents in the mattress where you sleep.

Innerspring mattresses provide great support, and because they provide a lot of bounce, they tend to pop back into place quicker and are generally more durable. If you want additional cushioning, a hybrid mattress that uses innerspring and memory foam or latex may be a good option because you’re still getting the durability from the coils.

Latex mattresses provide more bounce than memory foam and are considered highly durable. These mattresses do provide some contouring and sinkage, but because they spring back into position more easily, are unlikely to sag as quickly as memory foam.

Firmness

A mattress’s level of firmness will also influence how quickly it sags. Firmer mattresses tend to last longer, since the firm support layers withstand pressure more easily. Although comfortable, mattresses made with plush pillow tops may sink more quickly over time than mattresses with latex or innersprings closer to the top layer.

Medium-firm mattresses may be a good option if you prefer a soft feel but want to ensure your mattress lasts. For the most durable choice, look for hybrids that contain latex.

A long trial period

The best way to ensure you’re happy with your mattress is to shop for one with a long trial period. Most mattresses have a trial period of at least 100 nights, but some have trials as long as a full year.

By choosing a mattress with a longer trial period, you can see how it performs over time. If you’re unsatisfied with its performance, you can return it before the trial ends to exchange it for another model or buy a new mattress.

Sometimes it takes a while to adjust to a new mattress, so trial periods provide the time to “break” the bed in before making any final decisions. Please note: Some companies charge a return or shipping fee to return a mattress.

Mattress flippability

Some mattresses are designed to be flipped, offering a longer lifespan. By flipping it regularly, you can help prevent sagging or dips from forming in one part of the mattress. Remember, not all mattresses are intended to be flipped—some have a distinct top and bottom. In that case, you can help support longevity by rotating your mattress a few times a year.

How to tell if your mattress is sagging

There can be telltale signs that indicate mattress support is compromised. Here’s what to look for.

What type of mattress is least likely to sag?

Mattresses specifically designed for durability are made with coils and foam and are less likely to sag than all foam or all latex models. Coils underneath a memory foam or latex layer add durability to the mattress and can help prevent it from sagging. Here are the main types of mattresses and keep their structure:

Memory foam

Memory foam mattresses, in particular, tend to dip in the areas where you sleep since they aim to cradle the sleeper’s body. They are designed to provide contouring and sinkage where your body applies the most pressure to the bed. Over time, memory foam mattresses develop dips or sagging in these areas. If you’re worried about sagging but prefer memory foam, try buying a higher-density foam mattress because it takes longer to form depressions.

Latex

Like memory foam mattresses, latex mattresses are quicker to sag than hybrid or innerspring mattresses. They’re also designed to provide sinkage and contouring, although not as much as memory foam. Latex offers more “bounce” than memory foam, and that pushback will slow down the sagging process.

Innerspring

Innerspring mattresses are primarily made of coils and are less susceptible to sagging than foam models. This is because the coils can bounce back better than memory foam or latex, which slows down the sagging process. Also, the best spring mattress will generally have individually pocketed coils that provide more contouring than older models.

Hybrid

Hybrid mattresses feature a mix of innerspring and either latex or memory foam. These are among the best mattresses that won’t sag since they feature several support layers and typically include a base layer of high-density foam for added durability and support.

How to get a mattress that won’t sag?

What type of mattress has the best lifespan?

Hybrid mattresses are a great option for people concerned about mattress sagging. They tend to be durable because they’re made from a combination of innersprings and latex or memory foam. They typically have multiple layers of foam on top of the coils and also have a durable base made with high-density foam that lends more durability.

Frequently asked questions

You can fix a dent by adding pillows to the indented area and topping the mattress with a mattress topper.

You can add a high-density mattress topper to a mattress to enhance the overall support and edge support.

All mattresses sag eventually, but pillowtop mattresses may sag prematurely because the top layer is typically made of materials designed to be soft and compress easily.

Mattresses should last anywhere between seven to 12 years.
