Standard memory foam is known for trapping heat because it’s dense and doesn’t promote airflow. Unlike memory foam, Nolah uses AirFoam, which has an open-cell structure that allows greater airflow and is designed to help keep sleepers cooler.
The all-foam mattress absorbs and isolates motion well, which is a plus for couples. Mattresses with good motion isolation don’t typically have good bounce, but we found the surface responsive to help support mobility.

How we test the best mattresses for sleep apnea
Our Reviews Team has dedicated more than 1,000 hours to researching the mattress industry, consulting at least 10 health care professionals, and testing roughly 40 brands and 130 unique mattress models for quality and comfort. We’ve also interviewed eight older adults who recently purchased a mattress and surveyed more than 3,200 recent mattress customers to understand their experiences shopping for a new bed.
Each mattress undergoes a rigorous 36-page testing procedure to score its different characteristics, including firmness, support, and other aspects most shoppers consider. Based on the scores of the relevant criteria, we chose the best mattresses for sleep apnea. See how we tested the most important considerations for this review below.
Firmness
Like most mattress brands in the industry, we use a one-to-10 scoring method when testing firmness, with 6.5 being the true medium firm. Our testers rate this by lying on the surface and comparing the feel to other mattresses we’ve tested. Material density and coil strength influence firmness the most.
Sleepers with sleep apnea need a mattress firm enough to keep them upright and supported. A sleeper’s airway may collapse if the mattress is too soft or plush, which worsens sleep apnea and snoring. When rating the best mattresses for sleep apnea, we considered those that scored six or above in our firmness tests.
Support
We score support on a scale of one to five, with five being the most supportive. Mattresses with strong support contour and push into the curves of your body, particularly the lower back or midsection. Not only do we feel support during testing, but we can also see it through pressure map results. Maps with mostly white space at the lower back show how the mattress isn’t making contact with the area, which means the mattress isn’t supportive.
While not required, we look for mattresses with zoned support that cushions the shoulder and hip areas while reinforcing the midsection. This targeted support better supports side sleepers and may help with sleep apnea.
Pressure relief
We rate pressure relief on a scale of one to five, with five being the most pressure-relieving. We consider how it feels and use a pressure map with sensors to visualize pressure points around the body accurately. Blue and green pressure map results show great pressure relief, while yellows, oranges, and reds indicate pressure build-up.
Since many sleep specialists recommend side sleeping to help relieve sleep apnea, we prioritized mattresses with high side pressure relief scores.

What is sleep apnea?
Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that causes your breathing to stop and restart several times throughout the night. Sleep apnea has two types: obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and central sleep apnea (CSA).
OSA, which is the most common type of sleep apnea, causes your throat muscles to relax and block your airway, while CSA results in a blocked airway because your brain isn’t properly communicating with your throat muscles.
Common obstructive sleep apnea symptoms include snoring, gasping for air, dry mouth, headaches, and daytime sleepiness.
How sleep apnea affects sleep
Sleep apnea prevents high-quality, restorative sleep that’s essential for healthy aging. Depending on the severity of your sleep apnea, you may experience an average of five to more than 30 episodes per hour of reduced or paused breathing.
“Sleep apnea leads to excessive daytime sleepiness and poor functioning,” said Chelsie Rohrscheib, a neuroscientist and head sleep expert with the sleep testing platform Wesper.
“In the short term, sleep apnea results in cognitive issues, low mood, and low energy,” she said. “Over time, sleep apnea increases the risk for major health issues such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s Disease, cancer, poor immune function, and mental health disorders.”
When to see a doctor
We spoke with Chelsea Perry, DMD, a member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and founder of Sleep Solutions, to learn more about sleep apnea symptoms and when to speak with your primary care provider.
“It’s imperative to see a doctor right away for a sleep apnea diagnosis if you experience some of these symptoms,” she said. According to Perry, common sleep apnea symptoms include:
- Loud, disruptive snoring
- Someone witnessing your pauses in breathing
- Excessive daytime sleepiness
- Morning headaches
- Difficulty concentrating
- Mood changes, such as irritability, depression, and mood swings
- Frequent urination at night
- Dry mouth or sore throat
- Decreased libido
Less common symptoms may include insomnia, waking up choking or gasping for air, sweating excessively during sleep, and acid reflux. Your primary care provider will refer you to a sleep specialist, who will probably order a sleep study to diagnose sleep apnea or other sleep disorders. At-home sleep apnea tests are available, but your results should always be analyzed by an expert.
How to choose a mattress when you have sleep apnea
While a mattress won’t directly treat or cure your sleep apnea, it can support sleeping positions that may help keep your airway open.
Mattress firmness and feel vary for every sleeper and depend on your weight, sleeping position, and personal preferences. Our recommendations may not apply to every sleeper, so using your mattress’s full trial period is crucial.
Surface support
A more supportive surface helps prevent you from sinking too deeply into the mattress, which may cause your airway to collapse and become obstructed while sleeping.
The right mattress for sleep apnea must be firm enough to keep your body supported and aligned. The mattress should also properly cushion your shoulders and hips since side sleeping is recommended for sleep apnea.
Mattress firmness
Each sleeper perceives mattress firmness differently according to weight, height, primary sleeping position, and personal preference.
Medium mattresses with a cushioning pillow top or memory foam surface may be better for sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds. Lighter-weight side sleepers should avoid firm mattresses, which will likely be too firm to allow sleepers’ shoulders and hips to comfortably sink into the surface, causing discomfort and pain over time.
We recommend a medium or firm mattress for average-weight (130–250 pounds) side sleepers. Sleepers weighing more than 250 pounds should consider a firm mattress to stay supported yet comfortable when sleeping on their side.
Side pressure relief
Your sleeping position may help worsen or ease your sleep apnea symptoms. When you sleep on your back, gravity works against you, so a mattress for back sleepers is recommended. When lying on your back, your throat tissue and muscles relax, obstructing your airway.
Most sleep specialists recommend sleeping on your side to help keep your airway open and reduce snoring. The best mattress for side sleepers offers enough cushion in your shoulders and hips for pressure relief while supporting your midsection.
Compatible with an adjustable base
Some studies show that elevating your upper body may help reduce the severity of mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea. Consider a mattress that’s compatible with an adjustable base. Sleeping on your side is the best position for sleep apnea since your airway is more likely to remain open. Stomach sleeping may also help ease symptoms, but make sure your mattress is firm enough to support your hips so they’re not sinking into the surface.
